After high school
I had a four year apprenticeship as
a tool and die maker. I got
more experience with the same
company for another three years.
In the early eighties I had my
second apprenticeship with the world
famous Hirsbrunner company.
Many top notch musicians play on
Hirsbrunner tubas and Euphoniums.
After a few years of experience I
decided to meet the woodwind repairs
too. I did work with some
flute makers from Muramatsu and
later I did work for the company
which distributes Sankyo flutes and
Selmer/Bach instruments in
Switzerland. I also know David
Straubinger as a close friend and
because of that fact I am allowed to
work with his pads. I also had
the pleasure to work with people
from Püchner bassoons and I am very
happy to work with Fossati oboes.
My daily work includes 40%
consulting customers in either
buying or repairing (estimates) of
their instruments. The rest
60% is working on the bench and
trying to do the best job for our
customers.

(while at the music academy) and
various free-lance orchestra and
church work in California and Texas.
I'm presently Principal Horn with

My goal as a luthier is to provide fine craftsmanship to the doublebass
community. Too often basses get overlooked; every instrument deserves equal
respect and attention to detail. Formal training with violin and bass makers
has taught me not to cut corners, and that the player has the final approval.
I make, restore, and repair only. I am located minutes from the
Cincinnati Conservatory of Music (CCM), in the Northside neighborhood of

Larry Naylor
began a professional music career at
a young age and has been at it for
47 years as a woodwind specialist.
Realizing, in high school, that one
must be a little crazy to rely
completely on music performance as a
career in our society, his first
four years of college focused on pre
medical studies with an emphasis in
the physical sciences. As an Air
Force Bandsman during the Viet Nam
era, he realized that music was his
life. He served for four years in
bands on the West and East coasts
and Hawaii. Earning a B.A. in music
and a M.M. in woodwind pedagogy, he
taught instrument repair classes,
workshops for band directors,
applied saxophone, and woodwind
doubling at the University of
Colorado at Boulder for over 8
years. He has also given workshops
for the Lamont School of Music and
VanderCook College. He has presented
repair clinics for NAPBIRT’s
national conventions (National
Association of Professional Band
Instrument Repair Technicians). He
presented a technical clinic for
ICA’s ClarinetFest ’97 in which
he offered his on-going research in
the maintenance and restoration of
grenadilla and rosewood instruments.
He is a published author in
technical journals including
NAPBIRT’s TechniCom. Because of
his work with his professional
society, he functions as a master
clinician and a reference repair
technician specializing in
woodwinds. His approach to
instrument repair developed from his
experiences as a precision machinist
in tool and die for the Boeing
Company, a cabinet maker, and his
training and experience in the
physical sciences and music
performance.

About_Yourself:
Geoffrey Ovington began making
instruments in 1973 with the
guidance of Gustavo Alvarelli and
James Coggin. Working with a
Manhattan based dealer and
restorer advanced his acquaintance
with fine Italian, French and
English instruments and with
classic French bows.
The shop is now located in the
Adirondack foothills north of New
York City. Violins from his bench
have found homes in venues as
diverse as the Austrian Radio
Orchestra to the Bennington String
Quartet. An Ovington violin was
awarded a Silver Medal at the
International Competition of the
Violin Society of America at
Oakland in 1994.
In addition to commissioned
instruments, violins bearing the
label "G. Ovington e suoi

price which is realistic for the
conservatory student. The
wood used is well seasoned and
from the same European source as
all instruments from the shop.

Larry Naylor
began a professional music career
at a young age and has been at it
for 47 years as a woodwind
specialist. Realizing, in high
school, that one must be a little
crazy to rely completely on music
performance as a career in our
society, his first four years of
college focused on pre medical
studies with an emphasis in the
physical sciences. As an Air Force
Bandsman during the Viet Nam era,
he realized that music was his
life. He served for four years in
bands on the West and East coasts
and Hawaii. Earning a B.A. in
music and a M.M. in woodwind
pedagogy, he taught instrument
repair classes, workshops for band
directors, applied saxophone, and
woodwind doubling at the
University of Colorado at Boulder
for over 8 years. He has also
given workshops for the Lamont
School of Music and VanderCook
College. He has presented repair
clinics for NAPBIRT’s national
conventions (National Association
of Professional Band Instrument
Repair Technicians). He presented
a technical clinic for ICA’s
ClarinetFest ’97 in which he
offered his on-going research in
the maintenance and restoration of
grenadilla and rosewood
instruments. He is a published
author in technical journals
including NAPBIRT’s TechniCom.
Because of his work with his
professional society, he functions
as a master clinician and a
reference repair technician
specializing in woodwinds. His
approach to instrument repair
developed from his experiences as
a precision machinist in tool and
die for the Boeing Company, a
cabinet maker, and his training
and experience in the physical
sciences and music performance.

About_Yourself:
Geoffrey Ovington began making
instruments in 1973 with the
guidance of Gustavo Alvarelli and
James Coggin. Working with a
Manhattan based dealer and
restorer advanced his acquaintance
with fine Italian, French and
English instruments and with
classic French bows.
The shop is now located in the
Adirondack foothills north of New
York City. Violins from his bench
have found homes in venues as
diverse as the Austrian Radio
Orchestra to the Bennington String
Quartet. An Ovington violin was
awarded a Silver Medal at the
International Competition of the
Violin Society of America at
Oakland in 1994.
In addition to commissioned
instruments, violins bearing the
label "G. Ovington e suoi
alumni" can be purchased at a
price which is realistic for the
conservatory student. The
wood used is well seasoned and
from the same European source as
all instruments from the shop.

After high
school I had a four year
apprenticeship as a tool and die
maker. I got more
experience with the same company
for another three years.
In the early eighties I had my
second apprenticeship with the
world famous Hirsbrunner
company. Many top notch
musicians play on Hirsbrunner
tubas and Euphoniums.
After a few years of experience
I decided to meet the woodwind
repairs too. I did work
with some flute makers from
Muramatsu and later I did work
for the company which
distributes Sankyo flutes and
Selmer/Bach instruments in
Switzerland. I also know
David Straubinger as a close
friend and because of that fact
I am allowed to work with his
pads. I also had the
pleasure to work with people
from Püchner bassoons and I am
very happy to work with Fossati
oboes. My daily work
includes 40% consulting
customers in either buying or
repairing (estimates) of their
instruments. The rest 60%
is working on the bench and
trying to do the best job for
our customers.
