UNIVERSAL
BELL IRON/DENT STAKE The
application of this type of mandrel is identical to the previously
mentioned form mandrels with the exception that this type is not formed to
a specific taper, but instead offers a polished and buffed surface upon
which almost any taper may be worked (in conjunction with burnishing tools
and lubrication, of course). Even in shops where form mandrels are readily
available, this type of universal mandrel will see much use; a valuable
dent removal tool. |

DENT
MACHINE W/BASE AND ACCESSORIES At
the time of this writing this specific type of dent removal device is
only available through Ferree’s Band Instrument Tools and Supplies,
Battle Creek, Michigan. It is an invaluable tool if used by an
experienced technician in a repair shop that handles a sufficient number
of large brasswinds (i.e. Euphoniums, Sousaphones, Tubas). The
application of this device is based primarily upon leverage and
eliminates the need of the cumbersome and outdated dent removal
equipment once used for the larger brasswinds (usually requiring two
persons!). An expensive, but invaluable tool in a large brasswind repair
situation. For more information write to Ferree’s B.I.T.S., Box 259,
Battle Creek, Michigan, 49016. |
TAPERED
STEEL MANDRELS When
selecting (or making) a set of tapered steel mandrels, choose a variety of
out side diameters, tapers and lengths to suffice your anticipated
requirements. Be sure to store them lubricated and in a safe place.
Periodic checks for scratches or other blemishes may be necessary to keep
them in top shape. When in use, the mandrel should correspond as nearly as
possible to the straight taper being worked; using a small mandrel for a
large taper is as bad as using too large a mandrel for a relatively small
straight taper. (These problems will be outlined more specifically in
later chapters). |
